A deep dive into the United States Concealed Carry Association (USCCA) and its founder Tim Schmidt shows a meandering ecosystem of organizations, millions of dollars made, and many misled consumers
READ ONA new report by Guns Down America examines U.S. Concealed Carry Association (USCCA) founder Tim Schmidt's lucrative ecosystem of nonprofits, for-profit companies, and political groups built around “self-defense insurance” for gun owners.
The report traces Schmidt’s overlapping roles as president of the nonprofit membership organization USCCA, CEO of the services firm Delta Defense LLC—which exists to provide services to the USCCA—and majority owner of Universal Fire & Casualty Insurance, which underwrites USCCA members’ policies. The USCCA also operates a super PAC, and USCCA membership has nearly tripled since 2019, surpassing 850,000 members and generating an estimated $250+ million in annual revenue.
The report discusses how USCCA’s growth has been fueled by a fear-based marketing framework ("tribal marketing") created by Schmidt, which frames defensive shootings as a near inevitability that "protectors" need to prepare for and promotes membership as a shield from legal consequences. Schmidt has publicly instructed members to say as little as possible to police after a shooting and to immediately contact USCCA. Some members have committed shootings within weeks of being insured. Research shows that less than 1% of gun owners use their weapons for self-defense annually, despite the growing demand for guns for personal protection. At least three states have banned self-defense insurance due to concerns over its abuse.
