Guns Down America victories against LaPierre’s deadly status quo contributed to declines in NRA membership, relevance

Washington, D.C. — In response to news of NRA leader Wayne LaPierre resigning, just days before the start of a corruption trial in New York, Guns Down America’s Executive Director Hudson Munoz released the following statement:

“Under Wayne LaPierre’s leadership, the NRA created the deadly status quo of daily gun violence based on the lie that more guns are the solution to gun violence. LaPierre recklessly fueled the gun violence epidemic and selfishly abused the meaning of the Second Amendment to line his own pockets. Over the last 30 years LaPierre led the NRA in blocking any attempt to keep our families and communities safe from armed violence. Guns Down America has fought back against LaPierre’s agenda since our inception, from leading the “murder insurance” effort that fined the NRA $7 million to influencing Wells Fargo to break ties with the NRA, contributing to a steady decline in membership and relevance.

“LaPierre spent the last 30 years transforming the NRA from a sportsman’s group to a dangerous, radical and corrupt political organization, contributing to a proliferation of guns in America and public health crises. He leaves behind a legacy of terror with a power vacuum the NRA—and the country—cannot afford to fill with another extremist.”
