Victory for #WalmartMustAct! Walmart will “Dramatically Step Back” From Gun Sales

September 3, 2019

WASHINGTON -- Guns Down America released the following statement after CNBC reported today that Walmart would heed the call of the #WalmartMustAct coalition and “dramatically step back from gun sales.”

“Walmart deserves enormous credit for joining the strong and growing majority of Americans who know that we have too many guns in our country and they are too easy to get,” said Igor Volsky, Executive Director and Founder of Guns Down America. “I applaud Walmart and CEO Doug McMillon for continuing to lead in the fight against gun violence. That work doesn’t end with Walmart’s decision today. As Congress comes back from recess to consider gun violence, Walmart should make it clear that it stands with Americans who are demanding real change.”

Since the campaign launched, more than 65,000 people have signed a petition at WalmartMustAct.org calling on Walmart to end gun sales, 10 organizations have signed as national partners, 5 presidential candidates have supported the campaign, rallies have taken place in 5 states and hundreds of letters have been hand-delivered to Walmart stores.

The national #WalmartMustAct Coalition included Guns Down America, Color of Change, March for Our Lives, the American Federation of Teachers, Women’s March, Latino Victory. MoveOn.Org, DailyKos, People for the American Way, Change the Ref and Orange Ribbons for Jamie.

In addition to #WalmartMustAct, Guns Down America has led successful campaigns calling on corporate America to support a future with fewer guns. Previously Guns Down America partnered with Color of Change on a campaign that ended the NRA’s murder insurance policies.
